Afterhaving Measles Can One Get It Again?

If you lot've already had the omicron strain of COVID-xix, can you get it once again?

We asked three peak Boston doctors this week, and the respond is... they're not 100% certain.

The doctors did their best to reply our questions during NBC10 Boston's weekly"COVID Q&A" series Tuesday.

Here's what they had to say:

Can you go omicron more than than once?

"I don't call up that the data is clear," Boston Medical Heart's Dr. Sabrina Assoumou said this calendar week. "I think that what we exercise know is that, in full general, if you get infected with a detail variant, let's say omicron right now, which is the predominant variant, and if you got infected in December, you probably got omicron, so yous're wondering, you know, can I become omicron again?"

"And so, y'all know, my, my prediction would be that for a sure period of time, probably for, you know, three months, you would accept protection confronting omicron," she said. "Merely I would still recommend that you lot get vaccinated, that you are upwardly to date, depending on what that means to you, depending on where y'all are in that wheel using the CDC definition."

"I hold," added Dr. Shira Doron, hospital epidemiologist at Tufts Medical Center. "I think that i of the things that may be causing some confusion on this issue of reinfection is with the increased use of at dwelling tests, antigen tests, at that place has become a bit of a confusion again almost what is a PCR, what is an antigen exam, repeat testing. And what's happening is with this talk of examination-to-exit or testing afterwards yous've been infected with an antigen to come across if you're still contagious, people take started to retest with PCRs after somebody has COVID. And you know, it took us similar two years to teach people that yous don't retest for the PCR after someone has COVID. And now people are doing that over again because they're confusing the home exam -- the antigen test -- with the PCR."

Doron said people should non retest later on having COVID-xix with a PCR test for at least xc days because they see people stay positive on the PCR tests for three or even four months. Only that doesn't necessarily hateful they've been reinfected.

"Information technology'southward possible that you have COVID and y'all test positive and then you become another cold and you do a PCR again -- we run across this all the fourth dimension," she said. "And there are some clues that we tin utilise to figure out that it's not a reinfection, just you know, almost people don't undergo that kind of expert evaluation. And so I call up at that place are some falsely labeled reinfections, although, yous know, time will tell whether nosotros are seeing true omicron reinfections. But that really needs to be evaluated in a rigorous style."

Can you get omicron if yous had delta, and vice versa?

"I would be less confident that y'all volition be covered for other variants," Assoumou said of the possibility of reinfection with a different variant. "So yous know, if the delta variant were to go prominent over again in this country, y'all probably would not be as well protected against an infection from the delta variant as opposed to the omicron, and so that's what I would expect right at present."

Merely she said information technology's nonetheless as well soon to say for certain.

"Just to exist articulate, I don't think that we take enough data to sort of make a clear sort of statement about what we should await," Assoumou said.

Is the BA.two, or 'stealth omicron' variant, complicating matters?

"I agree with what Dr. Assoumou and Dr. Doron had said -- I think the merely small-scale wrinkle is whether the you know, the BA.2 variant, if it, you know, takes concord, could feasibly reinfect people who had already had the 1 of the before omicron variants," said Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes, principal of infectious disease at Brigham and Women'southward Infirmary. "I think it's unlikely because there's so much shared similarity that small differences are probably not enough to permit it to evade immunity to omicron, but you know, over again, as everybody'due south been saying, time will tell. Nosotros simply need a few more weeks to get a better sense."
